Katholische Pfarrkirche St. Bonifaz
St. Bonifatius is a Baroque church in Weißenohe, Upper Franconia. It stands at the heart of the village and rises above the rooftops with its 45-metre tower. The church was once the abbey church of a Benedictine monastery and now serves as the parish church. Its patron saint is Boniface, the 8th-century missionary who brought Christianity to the region. The building’s history stretches back to the late 11th century, when Pfalzgraf Aribo II and his wife Guilla founded the monastery. After a period of closure and change of hands, the monastery was refounded in the 17th century and a new church planned. Construction began in 1690 under Abbot Johann Gualbert I and was completed in 1707. The architect Wolfgang Dientzenhofer designed the church, while Johann Michael Doser carved most of the altars and the Asam brothers created the crucifix altar. Inside, visitors find richly decorated altars, restored ceiling paintings and four church fathers depicted in the vaults. The church has a Schuke organ installed in 1997, replacing earlier instruments. A 1965 renovation introduced a modern altar to meet liturgical reforms, and the 2007 jubilee returned the statue of St Boniface to its original place. Outside, three stone figures above the portal represent Boniface flanked by Wunibald and Walburga.
