Egglestone Abbey

Egglestone Abbey stands beside the River Tees in County Durham, half a mile past Barnard Castle. The Premonstratensian monks chose this quiet spot in the late 12th century for its isolation, the flowing water, and the ready supply of local stone. Their white habits earned them the name White Canons, and they worked as preachers and pastors across the dale. The first church was enlarged a hundred years later, and parts of that later building still rise above the grass. After the Dissolution in 1540 the ruins were turned into a private house, then left to decay in the 19th century. The abbey’s poverty is recorded in the struggle to keep twelve canons, the number of the Twelve Apostles. Scottish raiders and English soldiers marching to Neville’s Cross in 1346 added to its troubles. When the site passed to Robert Strelley he built a mansion from the stones, but by the 1800s even that had been abandoned. Nineteenth-century owners removed much of the fabric to pave Rokeby Park’s stables, leaving only the church remains. English Heritage now guards the ruins as a Grade I listed monument. Visitors walk among the roofless nave and chancel, their pointed arches and ribbed vaults still clear. The south wall of the presbytery stands highest, showing the fine stonework of the later rebuild. A low bank marks the vanished cloister on the north side, and the riverbank path offers views of the Tees winding past. Wildflowers grow between the masonry, and the silence is broken only by water and wind. The abbey’s isolation, once a reason for its founding, now draws those who seek a place apart.
