Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle is a ruined medieval fortress standing in the market town of Barnard Castle in County Durham. The castle occupies a rocky bank above the River Tees, with the ruins of walls and towers rising against the skyline. It was built in stone between 1095 and 1125 by Guy de Balliol, then enlarged by his nephew and grandson in the following decades. The castle passed through the hands of Scottish kings, bishops, earls and a future king of England during the 12th to 15th centuries. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later Richard III, made it one of his favourite homes after marrying Anne Neville in 1477. The castle’s later history includes sieges during rebellions and the Civil War, before it was stripped of its roof and stone to repair nearby Raby Castle. The ruins remain important to historians and visitors. The 12th-century cylindrical tower and the 14th-century Great Hall and Great Chamber still stand among the grassy mounds. The medieval chapel of St Margaret survives in the outer ward, its walls partly intact. English Heritage cares for the site, which is recognised as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a Grade I listed building. Locals once called the castle ‘Barney Castle’ as a phrase meaning a weak excuse, after Sir George Bowes retreated inside during a rebellion. The phrase entered dialect dictionaries in the 20th century. Visitors walk along grassy paths between the ruins, climbing to viewpoints over the River Tees. The remains of the chapel and the tower show the scale of the original buildings. Information boards explain how the castle changed hands through battles and marriages. The town below preserves its medieval street pattern near the castle gatehouse. From the riverside path, the castle walls rise above the water, framing views of the surrounding countryside. The site is quiet except for the sound of the river and occasional visitors.
