Richmond Theatre

Richmond Theatre stands in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames on Little Green, beside Richmond Green. Built in the late 19th century, it is a Victorian playhouse designed by Frank Matcham. The red-brick exterior with buff terracotta trim is listed Grade II* by Historic England. Inside, gilt detailing and red plush fabrics cover seats and the fronts of circles. John Earl called it one of the most completely preserved Matcham theatres in Greater London. The theatre opened in 1899 with As You Like It and has hosted many films and TV programmes. Its auditorium and exterior have doubled for Victorian theatres in Evita, Topsy-Turvy and Finding Neverland. A major renovation in the early 1990s added the Ambassador Lounge and more audience space. Sally Greene led the project with support from Richmond Council’s chief executive Richard Harbord and committee chairman Serge Lourie. Visitors find a weekly programme of plays, musicals and special music events. Pre-West End productions often appear, and Christmas pantomimes draw well-known performers. The theatre runs creative learning activities for adults and children. A relaxed performance in 2013 broadened access for the community. The People’s Choice Award at the Richmond Business Awards in 2016 recognised its contribution.
