Pressegger See

The Pressegger See lies in the Gailtal Alps east of Hermagor, a glacial lake shaped like a half-circle. Its flat basin averages only 3.4 metres deep, fed by underground springs and a small tributary from the west. The reed beds stretch wide around the shore, while the northern and southern banks draw crowds to sandy bathing beaches each summer. The lake is known for its clear water and the way light dances on the surface in the afternoon. Anglers come for trout and pike, and the surrounding meadows host rare marsh orchids in early summer. A footpath circles the water, passing wooden hides where herons wait for fish to surface. Visitors find benches under willows and a small jetty for rowing boats near the eastern outflow. In the distance the Gailtal Alps rise steeply, their limestone walls catching the last light of the day. Swallows skim the reeds at dusk, and the only sounds are water lapping and the occasional call of a cuckoo.
