Möll

The Möll is a river in Kärnten, Austria. It rises in the High Tauern range near the Grossglockner, the country’s highest mountain. After flowing for about 84 kilometres, it joins the Drava near Möllbrücke. Along its course it is dammed twice, first at Margaritze Reservoir and later at Gößnitz Reservoir. Part of its water is diverted through tunnels to power plants in Kaprun and Malta-Reisseck. The river is also known for its white-water kayaking and rafting. The Möll runs past Heiligenblut and follows the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. It separates the Schober Group mountains from the Goldberg Group to the east. Near Winklern it turns east into the broad Möll Valley, skirting the Kreuzeck Group. The Tauern Railway runs parallel to the river between Mallnitz and Obervellach. At Kolbnitz the river is dammed again to form the Rottau basin before reaching its mouth. Visitors can see the river’s dramatic upper reaches near the Pasterze Glacier. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road offers views over the valley. Rafting companies operate on the middle sections, where the water is fast and rocky. The Tauern Railway provides a scenic route through the surrounding mountains. Lower down, the reservoirs reflect the peaks and offer quieter spots to pause.
