Pfarrkirche Möllbrücke

The parish church in Möllbrücke stands in the village of the same name within the municipality of Lurnfeld in Carinthia. It is dedicated to Saint Leonard and began as a fortified church first recorded in 1499. The building shows the late Gothic style of the 15th century with a two-bay nave and a narrower, single-bay choir ending in a five-sided apse. The church is worth visiting for its well-preserved military features and fine artworks. The tower, built in 1527, has slits at four levels and pointed louvres, while the west wall still shows small ‘shooting loops’. Inside, the high altar is a late Gothic winged altarpiece made after 1510, with figures carved in an Upper Carinthian workshop influenced by the Pacher school. The left side altar was carved in 1781 by Mathias Überbacher, and the right side altar of 1654 displays rich Baroque ornament. Visitors find a late Gothic rib-vaulted nave and choir, an ornate rood screen with tracery, and a rood loft supported on three pointed arches. The sacristy door in the south wall has iron fittings and a late Gothic portal. The choir holds a painted console figure of Saint Lawrence from around 1420 and a six-seat stalls dated 1507. The south wall of the tower bears a 1926 fresco of Saint Leonard by Switbert Lobisser, while remains of earlier frescoes were uncovered in 1996.
