Gschlosser, Tiffen

The Gschlosser Hube in Tiffen stands on the western shore of Ossiacher See in Carinthia. Once the castle of Tiffen, it began as a Renaissance building in 1620 and later became a farmhouse. The main structure is a two- to three-storey stone building with a hipped roof and a tower-like section on the north side. South and east walls show 16th-century fan-shaped plaster patterns, while the north-west tower window has a broad plaster band. Above the entrance, 18th-century folk-style frescoes depict Saint Florian, a Madonna of Mercy and a male saint. The interior preserves rooms and vaults from the 15th and 16th centuries. A notable feature is the Renaissance coffered ceiling in the south-east corner room of the second floor. Outside, fragments of the old defensive wall remain, alongside a Gothic chest building and a Gothic granary. The chest building is a two-storey stone structure with chamfered window frames and iron grilles from the same period. Its ground floor, once used as a stable, is a two-aisled hall with three central pillars and a large barrel vault with lunettes. The granary, also two storeys high and dating from the 15th or 16th century, has a similar hipped roof. Inside, many reused architectural fragments are built into the walls. The whole complex sits among farm buildings and meadows, with views across the lake and the surrounding hills.
