Dumbarton Collegiate Church

Dumbarton Collegiate Church once stood in the heart of Dumbarton, a town in West Dunbartonshire. Founded around 1453 by Isabella, Countess of Lennox and Duchess of Albany, it served as a place of worship and care for the sick and elderly. The church included a hospital and a leper house located away from the town centre. During the Scottish Reformation in the mid-16th century, the church ceased to exist. Today, only traces of its past remain. The site is now home to Dumbarton Central railway station, where the church’s legacy lives on in a single stone tower arch. In 1850, the arch was moved to Church Street, and in 1907 it was relocated again to its current position beside the registry office. The arch stands as a quiet reminder of the church’s former importance in the town.
