Sound of Mull

The Sound of Mull lies between the Isle of Mull and the Scottish mainland, forming a stretch of the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by the Ardnamurchan peninsula to the east and the Morvern peninsula to the west. The waterway connects several smaller islands, including Calve Island, which sits uninhabited near its centre. On the northern approach stands Tobermory, Mull’s largest settlement, known for its brightly painted harbourfront buildings. Ferries regularly cross the Sound, linking Oban on the mainland with Craignure on Mull and other routes to Kilchoan and Lochaline. The channel has long served as a vital maritime route for ports along Scotland’s west coast. The Sound holds a rich maritime history marked by numerous shipwrecks. Among them is the SS Thesis, lost in 1889, and the Swedish cargo ship SS Hispania, which sank in 1954 after striking rocks. Divers have also located HMS Dartmouth, a 17th-century warship designated a protected wreck site in 1974 and later part of a maritime protected area. The wreck of the SS Shuna, a Glasgow steamer lost in 1913, lies near the Grey Rocks. These submerged remains attract divers and historians interested in the Sound’s nautical past. The surrounding landscape features rugged coastlines, sheltered bays and historic landmarks. Rubha nan Gall lighthouse, built in 1857, guards the western entrance, while Eilean Musdile and Duart Point lighthouses mark the eastern side. Three ruined castles overlook the Sound: Ardtornish, Aros and Duart, the latter still home to Clan MacLean. Nearby, Nc’nean and Ardnamurchan distilleries produce single malt Scotch whisky. The area’s traditional industries of fishing and farming continue alongside tourism, offering visitors a glimpse of Scotland’s coastal heritage.
