St Margaret's Church, Hinton Blewett

St Margaret’s Church stands in the quiet village of Hinton Blewett, Somerset, built mainly of Blue Lias stone with a Doulting Stone arcade. Parts of the church date from the 13th century, though the tower and other sections belong to the 16th or 17th century. The building holds Grade I listed status, marking its national importance. Over the south door hangs the coat of arms of Simon Seward, rector from 1514 to 1559. Inside, the church seats about eighty worshippers and contains an electronic organ installed in 1989. The five bells in the tower were cast in 1708 by the Bilbies of Chew Stoke, a noted family of bell founders. The parish forms part of a benefice that includes several neighbouring villages, all under the archdeaconry of Wells. The church’s simple nave and chancel reflect its long use for village worship. Its modest size and historic fabric make it a quiet witness to centuries of local life. Visitors find a plain stone interior with box pews and a small organ loft. The tower rises above the nave, its bells still rung for services. The churchyard holds weathered gravestones and a sense of stillness. The surrounding lanes lead through rolling Somerset countryside, adding to the calm of the visit.
