Chew Valley Lake

Chew Valley Lake is a large reservoir in Somerset, set among meadows and woods near the Mendip Hills. Created in the early 1950s, it covers 4.9 square kilometres and holds water drawn from the Mendip Hills to supply Bristol and surrounding towns. The lake flows into the River Chew for 27 kilometres before joining the Avon and reaching the sea. Its shallow waters average four metres deep, with deeper sections near the dam and outlet tower. Denny Island, always above water, provides a refuge for wildlife in the middle of the lake. The lake is important for wildlife and has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area. Over 260 bird species have been recorded here, including both resident and migrant water birds. Two nature trails wind around the shore, the Grebe Trail and the Bittern Trail, each offering different views and access points. Bristol Water works with wildlife trusts to protect habitats and encourage rare plants and insects. The lake also supports dinghy sailing and fishing, mainly for trout, under carefully managed conditions. Visitors find landscaped picnic areas, a tea shop with indoor and outdoor seating, a souvenir shop and a small art gallery near the visitor centre. The Grebe Trail is a 1.2-kilometre hard-surfaced path suitable for all visitors, while the Bittern Trail follows a grassy route with a boardwalk and a bird hide. The area around the lake is flat, with surfaced paths for wheelchair access and a 3-kilometre cycle route along the western shore. Parking is available at the visitor centre and at points around the lake, with some spaces reserved for those with fishing permits.
