Stadion Wiener Neustadt

The Stadion Wiener Neustadt, also called the Magna Arena, stood in Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria. It was built for football and speedway and hosted several local clubs. The 1. Wiener Neustädter SC and SC Wiener Neustadt both played home matches there. The stadium opened in May 1955 after three years of construction. Its record crowd of 12,000 watched SC Wiener Neustadt beat Austria Wien 1–0 in 1963. The venue also staged Austrian Cup and European club ties in the 1960s. Speedway events formed a major part of its history. The stadium held rounds of the Speedway World Team Cup and World Pairs Championship. In 1995 it hosted the Speedway Grand Prix of Austria. During the 1980s the ground was modernised with floodlights and a covered main stand. In 1992 it staged the Austrian Supercup final. After a long pause, FC Magna Wiener Neustadt returned in 2008 with a refurbished stadium. The site now lies empty after demolition in April 2020. Plans exist to build 500 flats on the land. The new Wiener Neustadt Arena opened in September 2019 nearby. The old stadium’s final season under a toy-sponsor name ended in 2018. Its history reflects the sporting life of the region over more than six decades.
