Zum weißen Rössl

The house at Hauptplatz 3 in Wiener Neustadt is a historic corner building on the town’s main square. Its origins go back to 1449, when it was one of the few structures with a tiled roof. The city bought it in 1571 and used it as a courthouse until 1770. After passing through private hands, it returned to municipal ownership in 1914 and still serves both official and commercial purposes today. The building mixes medieval and Baroque styles. Its core is Gothic, yet the façade wears a later triangular pediment bearing the city’s coat of arms. Beneath the street runs a two-bay vaulted passage with sturdy ribbed vaulting and keystones from the 13th century. A gently sloping arcade on the ground floor dates from the 15th century. Above the windows are eight murals by Hans Vonmetz from 1937, each depicting a historical figure linked to the town. Visitors can walk under the vaulted passage and admire the murals of Maria Theresia, Leopold V, Ulrich von Liechtenstein and others. The arcade offers shelter while the square outside bustles with daily life. The building’s layered history is visible in every detail, from the Gothic cellar to the Baroque gable.
