Town hall Wiener Neustadt

The old town hall in Wiener Neustadt stands on the main square in the heart of the city. It occupies the corner site at Hauptplatz 1 with further frontages in Neunkirchner Straße and Sparkassengasse. The building is protected as a listed monument and its core dates from the early modern period. A rectangular courtyard is enclosed by wings and a rear building, while an octagonal tower rises at the south-east corner. The main façade on the square was remodelled in the 1930s by architect Franz Günter. The building’s long history is visible in its fabric. Parts of the façade incorporate stones recovered from demolished city gates, including the Outer Fischauer Gate and the Outer Ungar Gate. Inside, the first-floor reception room has a ceiling decorated with stuccoed coats of arms from 1615. Two former vault keystones from the archive room, bearing the city arms and those of mayor Niklas Ottentaler from 1447, are now set into the staircase wall. Visitors enter through the round-arched portal on Hauptplatz 1. Above it hangs a balcony with wrought-iron railings supported by massive consoles. The courtyard arcades, built around 1600 by Markus Pagamin and Bartholomäus Kropf, run along the north and east sides. On the ground floor of the Neunkirchner Straße wing there are small shops, a traditional inn and an ice-cream parlour. The tower’s upper stage, added in 1834, carries an eight-sided dome.
