The Linn

The Linn is a waterfall in the Ochil Hills near Alva in Perth and Kinross. The falls sit where the Burn of Sorrow plunges over a lip of old red sandstone into a deep plunge pool. The name ‘linn’ is common across southern and eastern Scotland for waterfalls or their plunge pools. The burn carries a modest flow most of the year, swelling after heavy rain. The site is one of Scotland’s notable falls, though its exact height is debated. Many Scottish waterfalls claim great heights, but measuring the single largest drop can be tricky. The Ochils themselves are a range of hills running east-west, rising to just over 700 metres at their highest point. Visitors reach the falls along a path that starts in Alva and climbs through woodland. The route passes the old distillery site before emerging beside the plunge pool. From the viewing area there are views across the valley and back to the hills. The sandstone cliffs around the fall show the layers laid down in earlier geological periods.
