Keltie Castle

Keltie Castle stands in open farmland about 1.5 kilometres south-west of Dunning in Perth and Kinross. Built in 1686, it replaced an earlier house begun in 1454 by the Bonar family. The present three-storey L-plan house still shows fragments of the 17th-century structure. In 1692 the Drummonds acquired the castle and enlarged it in 1712. Later owners included the Earl of Airlie and, from 1833, Lord Rollo. The castle is recognised as Category A on Scotland’s statutory list of historic buildings. Its exterior mixes late-17th-century masonry with early-19th-century window frames added around 1820. Inside, a 1920s refurbishment introduced a Gothic-style front door and new ground-floor windows. The entrance now opens into a small vestibule that leads to the main rooms. Visitors approach along a farm track across flat fields. The castle’s south-west corner projects as a rectangular tower topped by a low-pitched roof. Inside, modest reception rooms retain simple cornices and fireplaces from the 1920s. The surrounding landscape offers wide views over the Ochil Hills and the carse of Strathearn.
