Cessford Castle

Cessford Castle stands as a ruined 15th-century L-plan stronghold near the village of Cessford, between Jedburgh and Kelso in the Scottish Borders. Built around 1450 by Andrew Ker, it became the principal seat of the Kerr family, notorious Border Reivers who once controlled the Middle March. The castle’s thick walls, up to four metres thick in places, and six-storey keep made it a formidable defence. A single-storey gatehouse guarded the angled corner of the L-plan, while a barmekin and earthworks surrounded the site. English troops once had to scale the walls in 1523 to breach its defences. The castle’s history includes a notable siege in 1523 by the Earl of Surrey, who admitted it might never have fallen if defenders had held out longer. Earlier, in 1482, Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, burned nearby lands before knighting twenty soldiers at Cessford’s mains. The Kerr family’s influence grew from this place, with later dukes adopting subsidiary titles from its name. Parts of an earlier structure may have been incorporated into the castle’s design. By 1650, the castle was abandoned, leaving only ruins as evidence of its past strength. Visitors today find a striking ruin set in open countryside, with the remains of the keep and gatehouse still visible. The thick stone walls rise in places, hinting at the castle’s former height and scale. Earthworks and defensive banks outline the barmekin that once enclosed the courtyard. The site overlooks the surrounding landscape, offering views toward the Cheviot Hills. A burn named Cessford Burn flows nearby, adding to the remote and historic atmosphere. The ruins stand as a quiet reminder of the Kerr family’s power and the turbulent Border Reiver era.
