Roxburgh

Roxburgh was once a royal burgh of great importance in the Scottish Borders, standing on a defensible peninsula between the rivers Tweed and Teviot. In the 12th and 13th centuries it rivalled Edinburgh, Stirling and Perth, serving as a royal residence and even a de facto capital under David I. The town controlled fertile farmland and river trade routes to Berwick-upon-Tweed, and housed a royal mint during the reigns of William the Lion and James II. Alexander III was born there in 1237, and Edward III of England spent two birthdays in Roxburgh Castle while occupying Scotland. Three churches and schools run by Kelso Abbey’s monks served the community until the Wars of Independence brought repeated sieges. The castle was besieged many times, most famously before Bannockburn in 1314, and finally destroyed in 1460 when the town was captured for the last time. Without its port after Berwick fell to England in 1482, Roxburgh lost its reason to exist and never recovered its former standing. Today only fragments of the castle ramparts remain above ground, lying south of modern Kelso and Floors Castle across the Tweed. The historic burgh site is now quiet fields, while a small village two kilometres away carries the name Roxburgh. Archaeologists were long barred from digging by the Duke of Roxburghe until Channel Four’s Time Team excavated in 2003 and broadcast their findings the following year. Visitors walk among grassy mounds and low stone lines that mark the vanished town and castle. The riverside setting offers views across the Tweed valley towards Kelso’s grand Floors Castle on the opposite bank. Interpretive signs explain the site’s royal past and the sieges that shaped its history. Nearby Kelso provides cafés and a market square, while the quiet lanes of the modern village recall the name’s long legacy. The landscape is gentle and pastoral, with no grand ruins left standing, yet the place still carries echoes of its medieval importance.
