Saint Margaret church

The late-Gothic parish church of Prambachkirchen stands in the rolling farmland of Upper Austria’s Eferding district. First recorded around 1200, the present building is a hall church from the early 1500s with a Baroque makeover that gives it a warm, inviting look. The tower at the north-east corner, added in 1528, wears a bulbous helmet added in 1835, while a side chapel opens on the north wall. Inside, the two-aisled nave has three bays under a net-ribbed vault, and the narrower choir ends in a five-sided apse with slender buttresses. A three-bay west gallery rests on matching ribs, and the whole interior glows with neo-Gothic fittings. The former high-altar painting, showing Saint Margaret, was executed in 1760 by Josef Stainer. A single medieval bell still hangs in the tower, cast in the 15th century. The churchyard is quiet, framed by mature linden trees and a low stone wall. A narrow lane leads straight to the west door, where visitors step from sunlight into the cool, shadowed nave. The light falls through small, clear panes onto the whitewashed walls and the painted ribs overhead. On the north side the side chapel holds a small side altar and a few votive images, while the tower’s deep arch frames the oldest sound in the village.
