Schloss Dachsberg
Schloss Dachsberg stands in the village of Dachsberg, part of Prambachkirchen in Upper Austria’s Eferding district. The present building is a three-storey rectangle with a four-winged farmyard beside it. Its façade dates from the 18th century, though the earlier four corner towers and double-hipped roof were removed long ago. The castle’s story begins with the Dachsberger family, first mentioned around 1200. After a fire in 1672 it was rebuilt on the same spot. In 1921 the Salesian order turned it into an academic boarding school. During the Second World War the headmaster Karl Eisenbarth resisted Nazi pressure, and in 1945 American shells struck the walls. Visitors today find a school occupying the main block. The old farm buildings house a theatre stage. Nearby, remains of the medieval fortress support a Lourdes grotto and war memorial. The surrounding countryside of rolling farmland and wooded hills completes the scene.
