Burg Ottendorf

Burg Ottendorf stands in the Ottendorf district of Gaildorf, within the Schwäbisch Hall district of Baden-Württemberg. It was built by the local noble family whose name it bears. After the family died out in 1399, the estate passed to Murrhardt Abbey and the Schenken of Limpurg. By 1439 the castle was divided among three owners: Murrhardt Abbey, the County of Limpurg, and the Lords of Münkheim. The castle was already uninhabited by 1523 and finally fell into ruin by 1582. Its history reflects the shifting power of medieval landowners in the region. The site offers a quiet reminder of Gaildorf’s medieval past. Archaeologists have documented its walls and foundations in detail. Visitors today find a grassy mound where the castle once stood. The remains are modest but clearly trace the outline of the former stronghold. The spot overlooks the surrounding countryside and the nearby village. A small information board explains the site’s history to those who pass by. The area remains peaceful, ideal for a short walk and a moment of reflection.
