Burg Schefoldseck

Burg Schefoldseck stands on a hilltop 580 metres above sea level, 3.2 kilometres north of Winterstettenstadt and 700 metres south of Grodt chapel. The site once belonged to the lords of Grodt, who built the castle in the 13th century. Konrad von Moosheim later became its owner. All that remains today is the low mound of the keep and a curved section of the old ditch. The ruined walls once commanded views over the valleys of the Riss and the Schussen. The castle’s position on the edge of the plateau made it easy to defend. Its builders chose the spot for its steep slopes and the natural protection they offered. Visitors walk across farmland to reach the quiet hilltop. The surviving earthworks show where the walls once stood. A low grassy rampart marks the line of the outer ditch. From the mound the surrounding countryside stretches away in gentle folds of meadow and woodland.
