Graf-Wilhelm-Straße 11

The house at Graf-Wilhelm-Straße 11 stands in Bregenz’s upper town, a quiet street lined with historic buildings. Built partly in the Middle Ages, it shows later 19th-century changes that give it a layered look. Its two-storey form rises against the old town wall at the back, where a low-pitched roof covers the whole structure. The modest dwelling is recognised as a protected monument in Vorarlberg. Its simple lines and solid masonry reflect centuries of use without calling attention to itself. The rear wall merges with the town’s medieval defences, a detail few passers-by notice. Inside, the rooms follow the narrow footprint of the site. Small windows let in light that falls on plain plaster and timber beams. The entrance passage leads straight to a staircase that rises between the two floors, its steps worn by generations of residents. From the upper floor a single door opens onto a narrow balcony above the town wall walk.
