Saint Radegund Church (St. Radegund, Upper Austria)
The late-Gothic parish church of St. Radegund stands in Hadermarkt, a village in the municipality of St. Radegund in Upper Austria. Built of tuff near a steep bank of the Salzach river, it belongs to the Catholic deanery of Ostermiething in the diocese of Linz. The church and its adjoining cemetery are protected monuments. The church was first recorded in 1372 and consecrated in 1422. Its four-bay nave has a single aisle in the easternmost bay and three wider bays to the west, added in 1560 with narrow side aisles and half-ribbed vaults rising toward the central nave. The central nave itself is covered by a net-ribbed vault. The single-bay choir ends in a five-sided apse and is also net-ribbed. The west front shows a late-Gothic circular window flanked by two round-arched windows, while the west gallery is Baroque. A Baroque turret with an onion dome crowns the western gable. The south door, a pointed Gothic arch with original ironwork, is sheltered by a small porch. Inside, the high altar from the third quarter of the 18th century reuses older parts, while the side altars date from the late 18th century and the pulpit from about 1730. A late-Gothic statue of the Sorrowful Mother from the late 15th century stands in the nave. A Gothic wooden relief of the Last Supper, probably Bavarian and possibly linked to Hans Leinberger, is on loan to the Upper Austrian State Museum. The porch contains mid-19th-century memorial paintings by Johann Baptist Wengler. In 2009 the remains of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter were exhumed from the outer church wall and, after renovation between 2015 and 2016, placed in a glass reliquary within the new altar designed by Christoph Mayer and Petr Barth. The church thus honours Jägerstätter, executed in 1943 for refusing military service under National Socialism.
