Burg Tittmoning

Burg Tittmoning stands on a steep hill above the old town of Tittmoning in the Traunstein district. The castle rises about 388 metres above sea level and overlooks the Salzach valley. It is a medieval hilltop fortress built on a rocky spur. The site includes both above-ground buildings and underground remains from earlier phases. Archaeologists have found traces of medieval and early modern structures as well as early medieval graves. The castle was first mentioned in 1273 when Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg acquired it as a border stronghold. Over the centuries it passed between Salzburg and Bavaria several times. Important figures such as Friedrich von Törring and Wulfing von Goldegg served as castellans. In 1324 the castle was destroyed by Bavarian troops but rebuilt and later converted into a hunting lodge. The late Gothic chapel of St Michael was given a Baroque interior in the late 17th century. Today the castle houses the Rupertiwinkel Heimatmuseum. Visitors can see the largest collection of target discs in Bavaria dating from 1600 to 1930. The museum also displays works by the local artist Johann Baptist Cetto. The main building still shows late medieval and 16th-century alterations, including a three-storey granary with a large hipped roof. From the courtyard there are wide views across the Salzach valley to the surrounding countryside.
