Heiligengeistkirche Eberndorf

The Filialkirche Heiligengeist am Berge is a small Roman Catholic church on the Holmberg hill northeast of Eberndorf in Carinthia. It stands outside the village cemetery, belonging to the parish of Eberndorf. First mentioned in records in 1601, the church has protected status as a listed building. The building’s core is Romanesque, with a wooden porch, a rounded apse and a slender spire at the east end. Visitors enter through a Gothic south doorway with a rounded arch. The nave dates from the late 17th century and has a flat ceiling partly decorated with stencilled paintings. The apse was remodelled in 1670 with a stage-like arrangement framed by early Baroque columns and niches. Paintings show the archangels Michael and Gabriel on either side, and the Trinity in the vault above. Inside, the high altar carries a carved group of Pentecost, a crucifix, a replica of the Holy Sepulchre, a sorrowful Virgin and a tabernacle from 1857. The stencilled ceiling panels and the painted apse architecture give the interior a quiet, reflective atmosphere. The church’s modest size and simple furnishings focus attention on its historic artworks.
