Austrian Institute of Historical Research

The Institute for Austrian Historic Research stands in central Vienna, a short walk from the State Opera and the Hofburg Palace. Founded in 1854, it moved into the University of Vienna in 2016. The building houses scholars who study medieval charters, early-modern court records and modern administrative files. A bronze plaque near the entrance lists past directors, including Alphons Lhotsky and Ernst Zehetbauer. The institute’s library holds runs of specialist journals that date back to the 1880s. The institute is worth the journey because it has shaped how Austrian history is written for more than a century and a half. Since 1880 it has published Mitteilungen des Instituts für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung, a journal read by researchers worldwide. Manfred Stoy’s 2007 study examined the institute’s troubled years between 1929 and 1945. Karin Winter and Jakob Wührer reported in 2012 on the shift from traditional archival courses to a modern master’s programme. Ernst Zehetbauer’s books analyse how the institute trains the country’s archivists. Inside, seminar rooms open off a quiet courtyard lined with lime trees. On the ground floor a seminar library keeps reference works within reach of students. Upstairs, a seminar room named after Lhotsky hosts workshops where researchers present their latest findings. From the windows there are views over the university’s main courtyard toward the Ringstrasse. The atmosphere is studious, with the scent of old paper and the sound of turning pages.
