The Main Building of the University of Vienna stands on the Ringstraße in the city’s first district. Designed by Heinrich von Ferstel, it was completed in 1873 after earlier plans for a different site were abandoned. The building replaced scattered teaching locations that followed the suppression of the 1848 Revolution. Emperor Franz Joseph I approved its construction as part of the Ringstraße development alongside the Parliament and Rathaus. Ferstel’s Italian High Renaissance style drew on models from Padua and Genoa, giving the façade its distinctive projecting corners and central section. The complex covers 21,412 square metres, with 14,530 square metres built over.

The building has been at the centre of political and intellectual life in Vienna for over a century. In 1936, philosopher Moritz Schlick was murdered inside the building by a former student, an event that marked the university’s turbulent history. A memorial inscription now marks the staircase where it occurred. The controversial Siegfriedskopf war memorial, installed in 1923, was moved to a less prominent location during renovations between 2003 and 2006 after decades of debate. The Main Ceremonial Hall and the Auditorium Maximum, with 751 seats, remain key spaces for university events.

Visitors enter a large arcaded courtyard measuring 50 by 40 metres, designed as the heart of the complex. Eight smaller courtyards branch off from this space, each leading to principal staircases. The Arkadenhof contains statues and busts of distinguished scholars, including Lise Meitner, Marie Jahoda, Sigmund Freud, and Erwin Schrödinger. In 2009, the art installation Der Muse reicht’s by Iris Andraschek was added to address the lack of memorials to women. At the courtyard’s centre stands the Castalia Fountain, symbolising wisdom and learning. The building remains a working university, housing faculties, libraries, and ceremonial halls.
