River Nethan

The River Nethan rises near Glenbuck in East Ayrshire and winds its way north for about twenty kilometres to join the River Clyde at Crossford in South Lanarkshire. Villages such as Lesmahagow lie along its banks, and the river’s course passes through quiet farmland and pockets of woodland. At its mouth the river has cut a deep, wooded gorge that is recognised for its wildlife and geology. This stretch around Crossford and Auchenheath is protected as part of the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve. Craignethan Castle, a 16th-century stronghold, stands on a ridge above the gorge, watching over the water below. The Nethan Gorge is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its rare plants and old woodland. The reserve protects over two hundred hectares of semi-natural woodland, including ash, oak and wych elm. Spring brings carpets of bluebells and wood anemones, while dippers and grey wagtails nest along the fast-flowing sections. The gorge’s steep sides and varied rock layers also expose fossils and glacial features from the last ice age. Visitors can walk the gorge’s paths and see how the river has shaped the landscape over centuries. A riverside trail follows the Nethan from Lesmahagow downstream to Crossford, passing old corn mills and weirs still in use. The path offers views of the castle perched above the gorge and glimpses of otters at dusk. Oak and beech woods line the banks, their autumn colours reflected in the water. At the gorge’s edge, information boards explain the woodland’s ecology and the river’s history. The whole route is quiet, with only the sound of water and birdsong breaking the stillness.
