Craignethan Castle

Craignethan Castle stands on a rocky promontory above a sharp bend in the River Nethan, two miles west of Crossford in South Lanarkshire. The castle was built in the first half of the 16th century as an early example of a sophisticated artillery fortification. Its defences were designed to resist cannon fire, though they were never fully tested in battle. The site includes a low central keep within a walled courtyard, a deep ditch, and a larger outer courtyard to the west. Steep slopes protect three sides, but the western approach is more exposed. The castle was the last private fortress in Scotland built from scratch with high defensive capability. The castle’s history is tied to the Hamilton family and their shifting fortunes. James Hamilton of Finnart, an illegitimate son of the 1st Earl of Arran, designed the castle to showcase his skills in military and domestic architecture. After his execution for treason in 1540, the crown took control and installed a garrison. The Hamiltons later regained the castle, adding an outer courtyard. Mary, Queen of Scots, stayed there briefly in 1568 before her defeat at the Battle of Langside. The castle was slighted in 1579 after the Hamiltons were outlawed, with its north-west tower and west wall demolished to weaken its defences. Visitors today see the remains of the keep, its walls rising to decorative corbels and topped with round bartizans. Inside, the keep has an unusual layout, with a large stair lobby on the main floor and vaulted cellars below containing four rooms, a prison, and a well. The outer courtyard contains the ruins of a later two-storey house built by Andrew Hay in the 17th century. The steep slopes and deep ditch still frame the site, offering views over the River Nethan. The castle’s defensive weaknesses, overlooked by higher ground to the west, are still visible.
