Burg Heusenberg

The Burg Heusenberg stands on a low polygonal hill 565 metres above sea level, 1.1 kilometres east of Rot, a village in Burgrieden. Built between the 10th and 11th centuries, it was a spur castle with a main stronghold, an outer bailey and a ditch. Today only fragments of the rampart and the ditch remain visible. The site is worth the journey because it shows how early medieval nobles defended their land. Archaeologists from the Landesdenkmalamt Baden-Württemberg have recorded the earthworks and dated the pottery found there. The Landesvermessungsamt Baden-Württemberg lists it among 451 archaeological monuments in the state. Visitors find a quiet hilltop surrounded by farmland and woodland. The remains of the wall and ditch run along the edge of the plateau, giving a sense of the original size. From the hill there are wide views over the Biberach countryside. The place invites a short walk around the earthworks before returning to the village.
