Wallburg Schnürpflingen

The Wallburg Schnürpflingen, also called Schlösslesberg, stands on a low hill in farmland south of Schnürpflingen village in the Alb-Donau district. It was once a small earthwork fort built by the Alemanni in the early Middle Ages. The site is now a grassy mound with a shallow ditch around it, all that remains of the old walls. Historians recognise the earthworks as an important example of Alemannic fortification. Archaeologists have found pieces of pottery and iron tools from the 7th or 8th century in the soil. The site is protected as a monument so visitors must stay on the paths and leave everything undisturbed. A short walk from Schnürpflingen village brings you to the quiet field where the mound rises. The ditch still traces the outline of the old palisade. From the top there are wide views across the flat countryside towards the Swabian Alb. The place feels remote, yet it is only a kilometre from the nearest farm track.
