Volkskundemuseum Salzburg

The Volkskundemuseum Salzburg sits in the Hellbrunner Monatsschlössl, a small palace built in 1615 for Archbishop Markus Sittikus. It stands high above the ornate gardens of Schloss Hellbrunn on the southern edge of the city. The building itself is a late Renaissance pleasure house with wide windows that once framed views of the Alps. Its light stone walls and steep copper roofs still catch the morning sun. The museum began in 1904 when Karl Adrian gathered objects that show everyday life in Salzburg. The collection includes costumes from each of the old Gaue, a Samson figure from Mauterndorf with its two dwarves, and masks called Perchten. Temporary shows explore topics such as the Landesanzug or display museum pieces in fresh ways, for example in ‘Operation Goldhaube’ or ‘Matthias tanzt – Salzburger Tresterer on stage’. Even performances have taken place inside the rooms. Inside, rooms on two floors hold glass cases and wooden stands filled with textiles, tools and small altars. A spiral staircase leads visitors from one gallery to the next. Outside, the palace terrace looks down over the gardens and the distant Untersberg. The quiet halls contrast with the lively courtyards below, where visitors often linger before climbing back to the museum.
