Salzburg Zoo

Salzburg Zoo sits in the south of the city, on Anifer Street in the Anif District. The 14-hectare site shelters 1,500 animals drawn from 150 species. Its other name, Tiergarten Hellbrunn, recalls the nearby Hellbrunn Palace gardens. The collection ranges from snow leopards and red pandas to pygmy hippopotamuses and Humboldt penguins. A South American house displays tamarins and capybaras under one roof. Visitors can also watch meerkats, lemurs and marmosets in open-air enclosures. Paths wind through wooded slopes and meadows, giving views across the Salzach valley. The zoo’s layout keeps animals in spacious surroundings close to their natural habitats. Families often linger at the petting zoo where children meet goats and sheep.
