Campbell College

Campbell College stands on a 40-hectare estate in east Belfast, near the Parliament Buildings at Stormont. The school occupies a single site with a small lake and forest named Netherleigh. It began in 1894 with money from linen merchant Henry James Campbell. The college runs a junior school for younger pupils and a senior grammar school for older boys. It also offers boarding places to pupils from around the world. The school has a long record of public service and sacrifice. During the First World War it lost 126 former pupils, and in the Second World War it became a military hospital. In 1951 Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother presented a Royal Charter here. The college keeps a heritage project called ‘The Men Behind the Glass’ to remember those who died in the Great War. Visitors find a campus of historic buildings grouped around playing fields and woodland. The Central Hall holds separate memorials to the two world wars. Six day houses and one boarding house organise sports, drama and charity events. A collection of butterflies gathered by Thomas Workman is on display. The college’s Latin motto, Ne Obliviscaris, means ‘Do Not Forget’.
