Stormont House

Stormont House stands in the Stormont Estate on the outskirts of Belfast. The Grade B1 listed building was designed by Ralph Knott with some involvement from Sir Edwin Lutyens. It served as the official residence of the Speaker of the House of Commons of Northern Ireland from 1926 to 1972. Several Prime Ministers of Northern Ireland chose to live there instead of Stormont Castle, which mainly served as offices. Later it became the headquarters of the Northern Ireland Office until 2022. The house shares its grounds with Castle Buildings but is separated by a fence. The estate itself is a quiet, green space on the edge of the city. The architecture reflects the style of the early 20th century when it was built. Its position on higher ground gives views over the surrounding parkland. Inside, the house retains much of its original layout and features. The rooms reflect its use as both a residence and an office. The grounds include well-kept lawns and mature trees. The setting remains calm despite its proximity to government buildings.
