Deserters monument in Ulm

The Deserteurdenkmal stands in Ulm’s Lehrer Tal, close to the former firing ranges and the present-day botanical garden. Created by sculptor Hannah Stütz-Mentzel, it consists of large stone steles arranged to fall in a domino effect from a small ‘stone of provocation’. A three-part plaque lists the names of six known victims of military justice. The monument is accompanied by a metal plate quoting Kurt Tucholsky at its base. Nearby, three information steles explain the history of the memorial and its significance. Opposite, in front of the old garrison detention centre, six Stolpersteine mark the places where soldiers were executed. Visitors find a quiet green space framed by the domino-like steles and the sombre plaque. The information steles provide context, while the Stolpersteine in Frauenstraße recall individual lives lost. The setting links past and present, inviting reflection on resistance and remembrance.
