Filialkirche hl. Alexius, St. Kathrein an der Laming

Sankt Alexius is a small Roman Catholic church standing on a hill about fifty metres east of the village in Tragöß-Sankt Katharein. It overlooks the Laming valley from the western slope of the Kleiner Floning, a lower peak of the Floning massif. The building is raised above the village on the northern bank of the Hüttengrabenbach stream at roughly 678 metres above sea level. No road or paved path leads to the church; visitors climb a staircase from the village to reach it. About a hundred metres south-west stands the parish church of St. Katharein an der Laming. The church was built in 1333 on the orders of the Stubenberger family to replace a small chapel, though the parish itself was not created until 1372. Its present late-Gothic form probably dates from before 1444, with external restorations carried out in 1958 and interior work between 1959 and 1964. It is a two-choir church with a single central column supporting a star-ribbed vault in the nave. The twin choirs are separated from the nave by two pointed arches set slightly off the main axis. Inside, the church contains two high altars, three side altars and a Baroque wooden gallery. The northern altar, dated 1640, stands on a Gothic stone mensa and is flanked by a 17th-century open confessional. The southern altar, carved in 1748 by Matthäus Krenauer of Leoben, shows the death of St Alexius on its main panel. The nave walls display fragments of 15th-century murals with foliage, animals and the symbols of the four Evangelists. In the tower hangs a bell cast in 1603 by Thoman Auer.
