Moel Sych

Moel Sych stands in the Berwyn range in north-east Wales, a subsidiary summit of Cadair Berwyn. It reaches 826.7 metres and marks the historic county boundary where Montgomeryshire, Denbighshire and Merionethshire meet. The peak was long thought to be the highest in the range until Cadair Berwyn North Top was found to share its height. A later survey revealed a higher top between them, now called Cadair Berwyn New Top. The summit itself has a simple cairn and commands views over Llyn Lluncaws in the southern Cwm. The mountain holds a place in Welsh mythology as one of the peaks linked to Gwyn ap Nudd. Legend names Moel Sych and Cadair Berwyn as the throne of this King of the Underworld and leader of the Wild Hunt. Walkers who reach the top stand where ancient stories once placed the Otherworld. The cairn at the summit offers a quiet spot to pause and look out over the surrounding hills. From the top, the Berwyn range stretches away in all directions. The path to Moel Sych follows grassy slopes and open moorland, with Cadair Berwyn visible nearby. The view down to Llyn Lluncaws shows a small lake set in a shallow valley below. On clear days the mountains of Snowdonia appear to the west. The summit itself is a rounded dome of heather and rock, with the cairn marking the highest point.
