Carnedd gron Nant Esgeiriau

Carnedd gron Nant Esgeiriau stands on a moorland ridge above the River Dee in Denbighshire. A round cairn of stones, it dates from the late Neolithic into the early Bronze Age. Its builders placed it where the skyline meets the moor, far from later settlements. The cairn measures roughly twenty metres across and still rises a metre high. It was raised not as a burial mound alone but as part of communal ceremonies for the dead. Cadw recognises it as a scheduled ancient monument under reference DE259. The people who piled these stones also raised other monuments across the landscape. Nearby lie chambered tombs, burial chambers and standing stones. A stone circle and hillforts mark the same period and culture. Carnedd gron Nant Esgeiriau belongs to this wider network of ritual sites. Its position on the ridge lets walkers see both the cairn and the wider upland horizon. Visitors reach the site by following a track from Llandrillo village. The final approach is over open moor, with heather and bilberry underfoot. The cairn itself is a low, grass-covered mound of quartzite and sandstone. From its rim the view stretches north to the Clwydian Range and south to the Berwyn mountains. The silence and scale recall the world in which the first farmers lived.
