Sacred Heart Church, Bournemouth

Sacred Heart Church stands in Bournemouth, a seaside town on England’s south coast. Built of yellow and white brick with Bath stone trim, it sits on Albert Road near the town centre and the railway station. The church is part of the Diocese of Portsmouth and holds Grade II listed status. Next door is the Bournemouth Daily Echo building, and across the road the Norfolk Royale Hotel overlooks the front. The Oratory of Saint Philip Neri has run the parish since 2017. The church began as a wooden chapel opened in 1870 on land bought with help from Lady Herbert of Lea and Sergeant Maurice O’Connell. Henry Clutton designed the permanent building, completed in 1875 with aisles and a tower. A 10 cwt bell from Whitechapel was installed that year. The high altar and stained glass were gifts from Mrs Brymer, while Baroness von Hügel donated the brass altar rails. The future Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val made his first communion here in 1872. Inside, the nave and clerestory date from 1896–1900, when A. J. Pilkington enlarged the church in early French Gothic style. The interior includes a sacristy, confessional, and work room block added at the same time. Outside, the façade on Albert Road was remodelled and a central tower begun but never finished. The church remains a quiet place of worship close to the town’s shops and hotels.
