St Peter's Church, Bournemouth

St Peter’s Church stands in the heart of Bournemouth, a Grade I listed building completed in 1879 to designs by George Edmund Street. It was the founding mother church of the town, replacing an earlier structure from the 1840s. The church’s spire rises 62 metres above the town centre, making it a familiar landmark. Inside, work by Gothic Revival architects and artists includes stained-glass windows by Clayton and Bell and frescoes by Edward Burne-Jones. The chancel is widely regarded as one of the richest Gothic Revival interiors in England. The church holds notable historical connections. Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, is buried here, and the heart of her husband, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, reputedly lies with her. The building was constructed in stages between 1855 and 1879, funded by public subscription. Later additions include the 1914 north-east extension and the 1926 Chapel of the Resurrection, a war memorial designed by Ninian Comper. The churchyard was restored in 2020, revealing a 4-acre woodland with wildlife and heritage trails. Inside, visitors find a spacious interior with a hammerbeam roof, alabaster fittings and a grand organ. The song school, added in 1914, serves as a rehearsal space for the choir. The church remains a shared community space, with a café open several days a week. The tower and spire were renovated in 2023, preserving the landmark for future generations.
