Grey Mare's Tail

Grey Mare’s Tail stands in Dumfries and Galloway, a region of rolling hills and quiet valleys in southern Scotland. The waterfall plunges from a height of sixty metres down the face of a steep rock face into a deep pool below. Its name comes from the long, narrow shape of the cascade, which resembles a horse’s tail. The site lies close to the village of Monreith, where the land rises gently before dropping sharply at the falls. Visitors reach the viewpoint along a short, well-trodden path that winds through heather and bracken. The sound of the water grows louder as the path approaches the brink. This is one of Scotland’s tallest single-drop waterfalls, measured at sixty metres from top to bottom. The force of the water has carved a deep plunge pool at the base, where spray rises in calm weather. The name ‘Grey Mare’s Tail’ appears in local records from the 19th century, though the feature itself has existed far longer. The surrounding landscape is shaped by ancient glacial action, leaving smooth rock ledges and steep slopes. The falls are fed by streams that gather on the moors above, adding to the volume of water. Their Gaelic name, Eas an Mhadaidh Ruaidh, reflects the region’s linguistic heritage. At the viewpoint, visitors stand on a stone platform that overlooks the full drop. The waterfall is most impressive after heavy rain, when the flow swells and the mist rises high. Below, the pool is a deep blue-green, reflecting the sky and the surrounding hills. The path continues past the falls, leading to quieter stretches of the valley where red squirrels are sometimes seen. The site is recognised as a place of natural beauty, drawing photographers and walkers throughout the year. From the car park, a short walk brings visitors to this dramatic feature without difficulty.
