Ravenstone Castle

Ravenstone Castle stands in open farmland about 3.5 kilometres south-west of Sorbie in Dumfries and Galloway. It is a four-storey tower house built of roughly coursed rubble, measuring roughly fourteen by eleven metres. Two long parallel blocks meet at a rounded east end from which a further wing projects. The west front has a central entrance reached by a short flight of steps, topped by a pediment above three evenly spaced windows. The gables at each end are crow-stepped with tall chimneys rising from them. The castle was first mentioned soon after 1455 and became a tower house in the 16th century. By the late 17th century a defensive tower had been enlarged and in the early 19th century additional wings were added to form a mansion. After decades of neglect in the 20th century the building was stabilised and partly restored between the 1980s and the 2010s. Original features such as narrow slit windows and a broad gun loop survive on the north side, while the 19th-century extension is dressed with polished red sandstone margins. Visitors find a compact medieval core surrounded by later additions, giving a clear sense of how the building grew over centuries. The main block’s pedimented entrance and crow-stepped gables are still prominent. Inside, only the vaulted cellar remains from the original floors and roof, yet the restored parts are habitable. The isolated setting offers wide views across rolling farmland, with no other buildings close by.
