Kleinarler Bach

The Kleinarler Bach is a tributary of the Salzach in Salzburg. It flows north from its source in the Kleinarltal, passing two mountain lakes before reaching Wagrain. Below Wagrain it turns west and after about thirty-one kilometres it joins the Salzach near St. Johann im Pongau. The river has the second-largest catchment entirely within Salzburg, covering 143.5 square kilometres. Its main tributaries rise in the Tappenkarsee and Jägersee basins. These upland waters feed the main channel as it descends through meadows and woodland. Walkers can follow the valley floor path beside the Kleinarler Bach from Wagrain upstream to the lakes. The route passes waterfalls and shaded thickets, with views of the Hohe Tauern peaks. Near the lakes the stream narrows into cascades before widening again at the Tappenkarsee dam.
