Brockley Jack Theatre

The Brockley Jack Theatre is a small Off-West End venue in the Crofton Park area of Lewisham, south London. It shares its building with the Brockley Jack pub, creating a lively cultural hub. Three founders—David Kincaid, Michael Bottle and Peter Rocca—opened it in 1992 as a registered charity. Its first show featured Chekhov pieces with Kincaid and Bottle in the leads. The theatre programmes established works alongside new writing and comedy nights. The Jack has built a reputation for nurturing new talent and fresh plays. It runs workshops for playwrights and hosts the Brockley Jack Film Club. Each year it presents Write Now, a festival of new plays supported by Lewisham Council. The theatre’s artistic director is Kate Bannister, who took over after Mike Burnside and Rhys Thomas. Associate companies such as OutFox and Bruce Farce regularly appear on its stage. A visitor finds a compact studio space with an intimate atmosphere. The programme mixes theatre, comedy, music and film events throughout the year. The annual Write Now festival showcases emerging writers in short runs. Recent awards include Offies for ‘Best Foodie Experience’ and ‘Most Welcoming Theatre’. The theatre’s friendly environment and varied programme make it a valued part of south London’s cultural scene.
