New Cross Gate Cutting

New Cross Gate Cutting is a 4.2 hectare nature reserve in Brockley, managed by the London Wildlife Trust. It runs alongside the London Bridge branch of the Brighton Main Line between Brockley and New Cross Gate. The entrance is on Vesta Road, between Barriedale and Sandbourne Road. The site lies on the former forest called Hatcham Wood, once part of the Kent and Surrey border. It is a remnant of The Great North Wood. The reserve provides a rare habitat for flora, fauna and wildlife, including deer. Woodland species such as sycamore, English and Turkey oak, hawthorn and silver birch dominate the area. The London Wildlife Trust organises regular open days and volunteer workdays. These events allow the public limited access to the site. Visitors find a quiet green space with dense woodland paths and clearings. The reserve’s varied plant life supports diverse wildlife. On open days, small groups can explore the site under guidance. The railway line runs parallel to one edge, adding a contrasting urban element. The atmosphere remains peaceful despite its proximity to busy London.
