Reinerkogel

The Reinerkogel is a 500-metre hill in the Graz uplands, standing on the left bank of the Mur just north of Graz city centre. It marks the southern tip of a ridge that includes the Lineckberg, Hauenstein and Platte hills. The wooded slopes separate the two districts of Andritz and Geidorf, rising nearly 150 metres above the valley floor. At its southern foot lies the Carmelite monastery of Maria Schnee, while the small pilgrimage church of St Ulrich stands on the northern slope. The hill is protected as part of the Northern and Eastern Graz Uplands landscape area and is reached by footpaths from two sides. The hill carries traces of a possible early medieval refuge fortification. Two sides still show parts of a ring wall and ditches, though most of the earthworks are now covered by vegetation. In 1300 the hill, then called Reunerperg, passed from a Graz citizen to Rein Abbey, giving the hill its present name. Wine was grown here for centuries, and in the 19th century the Reinerkogel became one of Graz’s most popular outing spots. A wooden lookout tower and inn were built in 1902, and the quickest route up was the Jakobsleiter, a concrete-and-stone staircase still in use today. Visitors follow the Jakobsleiter’s 338 steps to reach the summit ridge, where benches and a cleared view line offer glimpses across Graz and the Mur valley. The mixed woodland is mainly beech, hornbeam, chestnut and oak, with scattered fruit and walnut trees. Fungi surveys have recorded rare species such as Camaropella lutea and Diaporthe pulla, some new to Austria or the Steiermark. The hill’s dry summers and lack of springs shape the vegetation, while the restored staircase and new benches make the ascent easier. At the top, the quiet paths lead past remnants of the old fortification and down to the monastery and church below.
