Tantallon Castle

Tantallon Castle stands on a rocky promontory five kilometres east of North Berwick, its red sandstone curtain wall facing the Bass Rock across the Firth of Forth. Built in the mid-14th century by William Douglas, the first Earl of Douglas, it is the last medieval curtain-wall castle constructed in Scotland. The headland’s three sides drop sheer into the sea, leaving only the landward side to be defended by the great wall. For more than three centuries the castle remained in the hands of Douglas descendants despite repeated sieges. King James IV attacked it in 1491, James V in 1527, and Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1651 left it in ruins. The single wall is over fifteen metres high, nearly four metres thick and about ninety metres long, with three towers and a fortified gatehouse. The Douglas Tower, seven storeys tall, once held private rooms and a pit prison, while the D-shaped East Tower had gun ports added after the 1527 siege. The gatehouse’s entrance was guarded by a drawbridge, three pairs of doors, a portcullis and machicolations, and its rebuilt façade still shows the scars of artillery fire. A deep rock-cut ditch and a second outer ditch mark the limits of the defended area, and fragments of 17th-century artillery earthworks survive beyond them. Inside the courtyard, the remains of the great hall and private chambers show where the lord and his household lived. A 32-metre-deep well, re-excavated in the 19th century, once supplied water. The north range’s western section preserves roof lines and cellars, while the eastern section has partly collapsed into the sea. Along the curtain wall runs a parapet walk reached by arched stairs, offering views across the firth to the Bass Rock and along the cliff-girt headland.
